One of the most unusual crossovers is returning to the market, combining Japanese reliability with a brutal "American" style from the 80s. Japanese manufacturer Mitsuoka announced the resumption of production of the Buddy model, based on the world-famous Toyota RAV4.
The Mitsuoka Buddy is known for its unique design, which immediately evokes associations with classic American SUV models such as the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe from the 80s of the last century. Although the basis hides the modern technology of the Toyota RAV4, the appearance has been completely redesigned to achieve this retro effect.
The external changes that distinguish it are: massive radiator grille: Dominant, chrome grille that radiates strength and presence, rectangular headlights: Replace the modern lines of the RAV4 with classic, square shapes, chrome bumpers - front and a chrome rear bumper, which is a mandatory element of the style of old American SUVs, new panels - the hood, rear doors, taillights and of course, the rims that complement the look have been replaced.
Although the design remains true to the original, Mitsuoka is making an important change in the drivetrain, adapting the model to modern environmental and market requirements.
So far, the crossover has been offered with a two-liter gasoline and a 2.5-liter hybrid unit. The new Mitsuoka Buddy 2026 will be produced exclusively with a hybrid drivetrain. In addition, the model will be available only with permanent all-wheel drive, which guarantees excellent traction and confidence on the road.
In terms of the interior, manufacturers are adding new trim options, expanding the palette of body colors and including technological extras such as a panoramic roof and a digital rearview mirror.
The return of the Mitsuoka Buddy will be in the form of a very limited series. Production in Japan begins in May 2026, with only 150 cars planned for assembly.
This volume is significantly smaller compared to the initial series of 1,200 cars produced in 2020-2021, which makes the Buddy an even rarer and more desirable collector's item.
Of course, exclusivity and hand-made craftsmanship have their price. The starting price of the Mitsuoka Buddy starts at 7.26 million yen, which at the current exchange rate is equivalent to 40,865 euros.
For For those looking for a crossover that combines modern, economical and reliable hybrid technology with one of the most distinctive and "muscular" designs from the past, the Mitsuoka Buddy 2026 is an opportunity not to be missed.
