A legendary page in automotive history closed this week, only to give way to an even more exciting and glamorous story. Alpina, a name that has become synonymous with refined power and exclusivity, is no longer an independent tuning studio. With its full integration into the BMW Group structure, the German giant is relaunching the brand with a new, ambitious mission: to create ultra-premium cars that combine the dynamics of the M division with the comfort and luxury of Rolls-Royce.
This strategic decision marks the end of an era, but also the beginning of something grandiose. BMW's head of research and development, Joachim Post, confirmed that the first models of the new era of BMW Alpina will be based on the top-of-the-range 7 Series and X7 models. The goal is clear – to offer customers an alternative in the super luxury segment, currently dominated by brands such as Maybach and Bentley.
“BMW M is for the track and sport, while Alpina is for speed, comfort and luxury“, Post is categorical. This clear definition of roles is key to the success of the new strategy. While the M models focus on aggressive dynamics and extreme performance on the track, BMW Alpina will focus on sophisticated comfort, personalization and high viscosity, which allow long trips at high speed in an atmosphere of absolute luxury.
The farewell to independence was marked in a fitting way with a limited edition XB7, produced in just 120 units. This last model from Alpina's independent era is a powerful reminder of the legacy that the new models will have to build on. The last Alpina B7 sedan (2016-2022) impressed with 600 hp from a 4.4-liter V8 engine with twin turbochargers, air suspension and a unique design.
Future BMW Alpina models will continue this tradition, but with an even stronger focus on luxury and personalization. The updated 7 Series is expected to include the first version of the BMW Alpina, and in 2027 a new generation X7 will debut in an exclusive edition.
Whether the new models will be offered as hybrids or fully with internal combustion engines remains to be seen. But one thing is certain - the emphasis on premium comfort and personalization is clear. BMW Alpina is now positioned as the “luxury side of BMW“, ready to offer customers a new, unique experience behind the wheel.
This metamorphosis of Alpina is yet another proof that the automotive world is changing at a rapid pace. In the fight for share in the super luxury segment, BMW is relying on a proven formula - combining a legendary name with the most modern technologies and materials. Whether the new BMW Alpina will be able to threaten the dominance of Rolls-Royce and Bentley, only time will tell. But one thing is certain - the competition in this segment is getting fiercer, and customers will be the ones who will benefit from this.
