Six crossovers with reliable 4x4 (plus BG prices)

Although most urban crossovers rarely leave the asphalt, the reliability of their all-wheel drive system is key to safety and durability. According to an analysis by ADAC experts, some models stand out for their durability and can withstand significant mileage without major repairs. Here are six crossovers that will not disappoint you, even after 200,000 kilometers.

Subaru Forester

The third-generation Subaru Forester models (2007-2012) surprise with their excellent off-road capabilities. Their all-wheel drive system, which is either permanent drive with a center differential (for manual transmission) or with a multi-plate clutch (for automatic), is extremely reliable. In the automatic version, the clutch can last over 200,000 km with proper operation. In the mechanical version, the viscous coupling is slightly less durable, but with good maintenance it still provides reliability.

Volkswagen Tiguan

The first-generation Tiguan relies on a Haldex clutch for its all-wheel drive. Although it is front-wheel drive by default, the system quickly transfers torque to the rear axle when needed. To maintain its reliability, it is recommended to change the oil and filter more often than prescribed by the manufacturer - at least every 30,000 km. With proper care, the transmission can travel over 200,000 km without any problems.

Toyota RAV4

The drive system of the fourth-generation Toyota RAV4 (XA40) is extremely simple and reliable. It uses an electro-hydraulic clutch that connects the rear axle when slipping. Under normal use, it requires almost no attention, but after 100,000 km it is a good idea to monitor for overheating under more severe conditions. With regular maintenance, the RAV4's transmission can easily exceed 200,000 km.

Mitsubishi Outlander

The second generation Mitsubishi Outlander uses a cheaper but more reliable multi-plate clutch system. Changing the oil at least every 60,000 km is key to the longevity of the clutch, which can last up to 180,000 km. However, the filter is a weak point and its contamination can lead to overheating.

Mazda CX-5

The all-wheel drive of the first generation Mazda CX-5 is also based on a multi-plate clutch and is distinguished by above-average reliability. The system requires regular oil changes every 50,000-60,000 km to ensure a long life of the pump and drive. Under normal operation, damage is unlikely up to 180,000 km.

Nissan X-Trail

The Nissan X-Trail (T32) is a typical urban crossover, whose All-Mode 4x4i system is quickly activated when needed. The reliability of the transmission directly depends on the conditions of use. With calm city driving, the clutch can last over 120,000 km. However, with more active use, there is a risk of overheating, which can damage the pump or electronic unit. With proper maintenance, the X-Trail can travel over 170,000 km without serious transmission problems.
