Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to supply electricity in exchange for water to Kyrgyzstan

The water should ensure stable irrigation of agricultural lands in the southern regions of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan

Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to supply electricity to Kyrgyzstan in the fall and winter, Kazinform reports, citing the Kazakh Ministry of Energy.

This will allow the Kyrgyz side to reduce electricity production in the winter and accumulate water in the Toktogul reservoir. The stored water will be sent to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan during the growing season to ensure stable irrigation of agricultural lands in the southern regions, the statement said.

At a meeting of the heads of water and energy agencies of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, chaired by Kazakh Energy Minister Erlan Akenzhenov in Almaty, an agreement was reached to take joint measures to reduce consumption and promote energy saving in the region.

The parties agreed on the parameters for further cooperation in the field of water and energy. Given the difficult situation at the Toktogul Dam, the meeting participants decided to support each other with mutual electricity supplies and coordinate their joint efforts to successfully pass the heating season and prepare for the upcoming growing season, according to the Kazakh Ministry of Energy.
