The first major natural gas field has been discovered in the Philippines, announced the country's President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“The Philippines has discovered a natural gas field in the Malampaya East-1 field. This is our first major discovery in more than a decade, giving new impetus to our efforts to ensure a stable and reliable energy supply to the country“, he wrote on Facebook.

The president announced that large natural gas fields have been discovered approximately 5 km east of the existing Malampaya field. The reserves of the discovered field are approximately 2.8 billion cubic meters of gas, which is equivalent to nearly 14 billion kWh of electricity per year. This amount of gas will provide electricity for more than 5.7 million households and approximately 200,000 schools, Marcos Jr. added.

According to the head of state, the drilling was carried out by Filipino specialists. No incidents were recorded during the work.
