Pumpkins Price Increase by 8%

The seventh week of 2026 (February 10-16) is characterized by moderate seasonal pressure in the “Vegetables” sector against the backdrop of sustained stability in meat, dairy products and basic food items. The market remains balanced, with no signs of structural price increases in the consumer basket, according to data from the weekly operational analysis of the Agricultural Market Information System (AMPI), provided to BTA.

Products with the largest price changes

The most significant fluctuations for the reporting period are concentrated in the “Fruits and Vegetables" sector, with the driving force being the combination of seasonal demand, transportation costs and limited domestic production in the winter period.

Pumpkins rose in price by 8 percent, reaching an average national price of 1.05 euros/kg. Gherkins also grew by 8 percent, with market levels around 2.78 euros/kg, driven by reduced supply of the imported product. The price of cauliflower rose by 6 percent and it is traded at an average of 2.88 euros/kg, which SAPI defines as typical for the season with increasing consumer demand.

Strawberries rose by 5 percent, reaching 8.81 euros/kg, which is justified by the fact that these are early imported strawberries in conditions of limited supply. Garlic saw a price increase of 4 percent and it is traded at an average of 5.11 euros/kg. Green onions also rose by 4 percent to 0.75 euros/piece. For greenhouse tomatoes and eggplants, the price increase is more moderate - up by 3 percent to 2.77 euros/kg and 4.20 euros/kg, respectively. Green peppers and lemons are more expensive by 2 percent, to 4.03 euros/kg and 2.54 euros/kg, respectively.

In the opposite direction - potatoes are cheaper by 3 percent to 0.93 euros/kg, and turtle is down by 5 percent to 14.92 euros/kg.

Sector overview

Complete stability is observed in meat and poultry products. Pork leg with bone is traded at an average of 5.63 euros/kg, pork neck without bone - 7.89 euros/kg. Chicken (frozen and chilled) remains at 4.26 euros/kg, and chilled chicken fillet - 8.19 euros/kg. Lamb meat remains at 14.33 euros/kg without weekly change, despite the approaching Easter period. Standard M eggs are 0.27 euros/pc., and size L - 0.30 euros/pc., without change compared to the previous week.

In dairy products the picture is practically unchanged. Fresh cow's milk in a bottle is offered at an average of 1.80 euros/l, and in a tetrapack - 1.70 euros/l, with a minimum increase of 1 percent in individual cuts. Cow's milk cheese varies in a wide range - from 12.26 euros/kg (large pita) to 16.59 euros/kg (vacuum-packed according to BDS). Cow's cheese in a 15 kg bucket is traded at 8.62 euros/kg, and vacuum-packed sheep's cheese is 15.18 euros/kg. Yogurt is offered at an average of 0.79 euros/unit.

There is minimal movement in bread and basic groceries. White bread, “Dobrudja“ bread and standard bread rose symbolically by 1 percent, reaching 1.52 euros/kg, 1.52 euros/kg and 1.55 euros/kg, respectively. Type 500 flour remains at 1 euro/kg without change. Sugar recorded a slight decrease of 1 percent to 1.25 euros/kg, and oil was stable at 2 euros/l.

In fish, the price of cod increased significantly by 16 percent to 19.87 euros/kg, which SAPI reports as a seasonal phenomenon for delicatessen fish. The situation for consumer-available species is as follows: mackerel is 6.51 euros/kg, herring - 4.41 euros/kg, and horse mackerel - 5.89 euros/kg, without significant changes.

Overall assessment

Prices for the week registered a moderate movement, dictated entirely by seasonal factors in greenhouse and imported production. The main categories - meat, milk, bread and durable food products - remain stable, which is indicative of balanced demand and supply in the initial period after the introduction of the euro, SAPI points out.
