The Minister of Communications and Information Technology in the transitional government of Syria, Abdelsalam Haykal, signed a cooperation agreement with the leadership of the US payment system Visa. This was announced by Tom Barrack, US Special Presidential Envoy for Syria and US Ambassador to Turkey.
„This is a promising step towards modernizing Syria's digital economy and strengthening economic ties“, Barrack noted.
He noted that Visa technologies will significantly contribute to the accelerated modernization of the Syrian economy.
Earlier on Aug. Reuters reported that State Department officials, during a meeting with Haykal, called on Damascus to stop using Chinese equipment in operating critical digital infrastructure.
In December 2025, Visa announced the return of its payment system to Syria.
