Several types of banknotes have been withdrawn from circulation in Ukraine as of today. These banknotes can now be used for payment only with the corresponding coins in circulation, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) announced.

„From March 2, 2026, banknotes with a denomination of 1, 2, 5 and 10 hryvnia, issued between 2003 and 2007, will be replaced with the corresponding coins in circulation. From that date, these banknotes will cease to be legal tender and will be withdrawn from circulation“, the NBU said.

Shops, cafes, pharmacies, banks and other service providers will no longer accept these banknotes. Ukrainians were required to exchange them for coins in advance.

The NBU explains the reason for the withdrawal of the banknotes by saying that citizens rarely used them for payments, their average shelf life was approximately 2.5 years, and the remaining ones in circulation were worn out. Meanwhile, coins of the same denominations have been in circulation for many years.
