Donald Trump will be the first sitting US president whose signature will appear on US banknotes, the country's Treasury Department announced.

According to the statement of the department, the banknotes issued from this year will be signed by President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Besant. Traditionally, they bear the signatures of the US Secretary of the Treasury and the US Secretary of the Treasury.

The department attributes the decision to change the design of the banknote to the upcoming celebration of the 250th anniversary of US independence.

A commemorative gold coin with the image of Donald Trump is also planned for this anniversary. Its design was approved earlier this month. The size and denomination are still being discussed.

The image of a sitting president on American commemorative coins is rare, writes The Wall Street Journal, noting that in the United States, coins with the image of the head of state are usually issued posthumously.

The only exception is the 50-cent coin issued for the 150th anniversary of US independence in 1926. The obverse depicts the profiles of the first US president George Washington and then-president Calvin Coolidge, while the reverse features the Liberty Bell.
