Drugs created entirely with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) technology will appear on the market by the end of the decade. This opinion was expressed by the head of the Hong Kong biotechnology company Insilico Medicine Alex Zhavoronkov to Bloomberg.

They will likely be on sale “in the next five to six years“, he believes.

The pharmaceutical industry has long claimed that the use of artificial intelligence will “reduce the time and cost of research and development“, but no such drugs have yet been approved.

As the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner, British scientist Demis Hassabis, has already stated, testing of the first of the drugs developed with the help of artificial intelligence to treat cancer and cardiovascular diseases, as well as neurodegeneration, will begin before the end of 2025. On average, it will take 5-10 years to discover a drug. It is possible to speed up the process by 10 times, which would be a breakthrough in healthcare, said Hassabis, who is CEO of DeepMind, Google's artificial intelligence division.
