Europe sets new record for LNG imports

Europe set a record for liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports in May, according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE). The European Union renewed its historic maximum in liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchases for the third consecutive month.

According to the results of May, liquefied natural gas (LNG) flows from European terminals to the EU gas transmission system amounted to about 12.8 billion cubic meters. m, which is 0.7% more than in April and 38% more than in May 2024. The data is a record for the entire history, breaking the previous maximum from April this year (12.7 billion cubic meters).

In total, according to the results of January-May, supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from terminals to the gas transportation system of Europe amounted to about 59.5 billion cubic meters. m - 17% more than for the same period in 2024.

Supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2025 will take first place in share among gas sources for Europe - 38%, according to data from the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG) as of May 30. In second place with a share of 24.7% are supplies from the North Sea (mainly Norwegian gas), in third place with 17.8% is gas production from storage facilities.

This exceeded the data for supplies from the East (Russian gas, Ukrainian gas supplies, as well as gas production from Ukrainian underground gas storage facilities by European companies) - 4.3%. Gas supplies from North Africa account for 9.1%, from the UK - 3%, from Azerbaijan - 3.1%.
