Mexico will ask the US to remove it from the list of countries against which Washington has imposed 50% tariffs on steel imports. “On Friday, we will ask the US to remove Mexico from this measure, as was done with the United Kingdom“, said Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard. The minister also said that he would travel to Washington on June 6, where he will hold meetings with his American colleagues.

The head of the Mexican economy ministry indicated that he considers it unlikely that the increased 50% tariffs on steel imports will be in force for a long time. “As has happened with other tariffs, the US will have to adjust these tariffs because the economic consequences are extremely high“, the minister added.

“I think the introduction of increased tariffs on steel imports is unfair to Mexico because the US has a surplus with Mexico. It makes no sense to introduce tariffs on a product for which you have a surplus. They are usually introduced when you have a deficit, not a surplus“, Ebrard noted.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced an increase in tariffs on steel imports from 25% to 50%. It was also reported that the increase in tariffs would also affect aluminum imports into the US. According to Trump, the US administration “is increasing tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50%, effective Wednesday, June 4“.
