A "mule" with 55,000 leva from a phone scam was detained at the Danube Bridge border checkpoint. A joint operation by officers from the Border Police, National Police and the Police Station in Pazardzhik prevented the transfer of the money obtained through fraud, the police announced.

During a check last night at the border towards Romania, border police officers detected a 41-year-old man from Dupnitsa. 55,000 leva was found on him. He confessed that the amount was taken through a telephone scam from an elderly man from Pazardzhik.

The victim was a 79-year-old man who had not filed a police report because he still believed that he had handed over the money in an operation against fraudsters.

The fraudster was initially detained for 24 hours, and after charges were filed - by a decree of the prosecutor's office for a period of up to 72 hours. Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated, and work on the case continues.
