Bulgarian truck driver arrested for accident with victim in Thessaloniki

The victim was conscious after the impact and was taken to hospital, where he later died

A 54-year-old Bulgarian truck driver was taken into custody after an accident that occurred on the morning of September 19 in Thessaloniki, NOVA reported. A 29-year-old motorcyclist died in the incident.

According to local authorities, the truck driven by the Bulgarian was exiting a side street and trying to cross a boulevard when the serious collision with the motorcyclist occurred. According to a video recording of the incident, at the time of the maneuver, three people were trying to regulate traffic at the intersection, while other vehicles were stopped to the left and right of the truck. The footage shows the motorcyclist seemingly not stopping and crashing into the heavy goods vehicle.

The victim was conscious after the impact and was taken to hospital, where he later died.

Following the interrogations, the prosecutor's office filed charges against four people - the truck driver and the three men who, according to investigators, helped him with the maneuvers. They have been charged with dangerous driving and intentional violation of traffic rules, leading to death. Only the Bulgarian driver remains in custody, while the other three - two Greeks aged 65 and 53 and an Albanian aged 34 - have been released with restrictive measures.

All defendants deny their guilt. “When I was passing, the traffic light was green. I was heading to the opposite point to unload goods. "I didn't see the motorcycle before it fell off the left side of the truck," the Bulgarian claims. He emphasizes that he immediately got out of the vehicle to help the injured person.

“We are not responsible for the incident. The truck started at the green light,“ his three co-defendants told investigators.
