Momchil Kuzmanov: Independence is a brilliantly prepared diplomatic operation

Alexander Malinov is one of the most significant Bulgarian politicians in the period after the Liberation

Alexander Malinov is one of the most significant Bulgarian politicians in the period after the Liberation. Malinov is a Bessarabian Bulgarian who graduated from law school in Kiev. He returned to Bulgaria after the liberation and worked as a lawyer. He became a member of the Democratic Party and later (after the death of Petko Karavelov) - its leader. Of the greatest importance in his life path were his activities as Prime Minister in several governments and the declaration of Independence of Bulgaria in 1908, recalls historian Momchil Kuzmanov, quoted by the Bulgarian National Radio.

The declaration of Independence is an indicative example of a brilliantly prepared diplomatic operation. It was preceded by a complex series of secret negotiations to secure the support of Russia and Austria-Hungary, as well as the favorable neutrality of other countries. The moment was well chosen - the Ottoman Empire broke out in the same year, the Young Turk Revolution, and it was not ready to react to Bulgarian independence, and even the diplomatic reaction was sluggish, says archaeologist, historian and history teacher Momchil Kuzmanov.

"Not even a year later, the issue was completely settled. Everything ended peacefully and calmly."

According to him, this holiday remains slightly underestimated in our national consciousness, because no blood was shed, and the event passed peacefully.
