“Parliament is ready to quickly vote on the necessary changes in legislation in order to accelerate work on infrastructure projects to provide water in disaster-hit regions.” This was stated by the chairman of the parliamentary group of “BSP-United Left” Dragomir Stoynev at the first meeting of the National Water Board, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov. The meeting was also attended by MPs from the left, Bilyana Ivanova and Vladimir Georgiev.

He stressed that the MPs are ready with urgent actions and legislative initiatives, paving the way for faster work on infrastructure projects to provide water to disaster-hit regions. “We will provide full assistance to the Water Board, because access to clean drinking water is a fundamental right of the people and a responsibility of the state.”, Stoynev added.

Stoynev emphasized that engineering and technical solutions are important, but a comprehensive policy and political solutions are needed to address the problems in the disaster-stricken areas in order to guarantee long-term peace and security for the people. The policies through which the state will invest in the reform of the water and sanitation sector must become visible in the next state budget. There must be a strategic political vision behind the sustainable financing of sectoral projects, the socialists believe.

According to Stoynev, the fight against the water crisis requires the unification of institutions and consistent efforts. “We cannot allow people and entire regions to live in uncertainty due to a lack of water - the state is obliged to act quickly and decisively”, he added.
