After an inspection commissioned by Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev, the Sofia Inspectorate has drawn up an act against the company that dug up and put anti-parking pegs in front of the entrance to the parliament last week.

„As mayor, I have undertaken to protect Sofia from such practices. No official entrance will become a symbol of impunity. Sofia is a city for the people, not a territory to be fenced off by the powerful of the day”, Terziev commented.

The mayor also calls on the prosecutor's office to do its part of the work, “so that the real culprit who assigned the company this outrageous abuse of cultural heritage can be identified and punished”.

Following a citizen's report on Friday (September 19) about illegally placed anti-parking pegs and construction activities carried out on the yellow paving stones at the official entrance to the National Assembly, the Sofia Inspectorate carried out an immediate inspection, on the orders of the mayor of Sofia. It found that the work was carried out without the documents and permits required by law, especially when it comes to a site of cultural and historical significance.

The contractor company was given a deadline to submit project documentation and permits, but these were not provided. As a result, the inspectorate drew up a violation report, and the materials were sent to the Ministry of Culture and the direction of “Architecture and Urban Planning“ for taking sanctions according to competence.

“When “statesmen” with a capital “D” manage institutions as a private business and treat cultural heritage as a bargaining chip, they destroy not only Sofia, but also trust in the state, in statehood. The citizens of Sofia and Bulgaria expect the parliament to be an example of legality, not a place where the law is trampled. The Sofia Municipality will act firmly in any manifestation of lawlessness - regardless of #who is behind it. No one has the right to seize and fence for themselves what belongs to everyone“, wrote Mayor Vasil Terziev in his post on social networks.
