A spectator died and eight people were injured during an accident at the "Aladzha Monastery" mountain climbing car race, which is taking place in Varna, the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Varna announced, quoted by BTA.

The accident was reported at 11:10. The accident occurred on the first bend, after the T-shaped intersection with "Knyaz Boris I" Blvd., in the direction of "Aladzha Monastery".

A person from the audience died, into whom the car crashed after the pilot missed the bend and went over the guardrail.

The deceased is 60 years old. A 27-year-old woman is in intensive care with life-threatening injuries. A 39-year-old man is in orthopedics with an ankle fracture.

The number of injured is increasing because people with minor injuries are currently being taken to the hospital, the police added.

The car race is in memory of Todor Slavov, who died after an accident at the “Tvarditsa-Elena“ rally in 2015. The race is the fourth and final round of the National Championship and 34 crews had submitted applications for participation, with two pilots leading a contested battle for the championship title.

The event is organized by the Automobile Federation of Bulgaria with the assistance of the Municipality of Varna.

BTA recalls that at the end of May 2009, during a closed-route rally in Varna, three people were injured in an accident, one of whom later died in hospital.
