The management of the Elenite holiday village: Nature has shown a force that the infrastructure cannot stop

The measured precipitation shows an unprecedented situation

This is a moment when the state must be with its citizens, not against them.

This is stated in a statement sent to the media.

The management of the Elenite holiday village sent a statement regarding the flood of October 3, 2025. Here is what it says:

With deep sorrow and empathy for the tragedy that affected our region, the management of the “Elenite“ holiday village expresses its sincere condolences to the families of those who died and those injured in the disaster. What we experienced was an unexpected and devastating natural disaster, against which man and his facilities are powerless.

The measured rainfall shows an unprecedented situation

The own meteorological station, located on the territory of the holiday village “Elenite“, registered 340 liters of rain per square meter within a few hours. This is an amount that many times exceeds the monthly norm for the region and confirms the exceptional scale of the phenomenon. According to data from other sources and observations in the Stara Planina region, the amount of rainfall upstream in the watershed was even greater, which explains the sudden and massive amount of water that arrived.

A sudden wave of water descended from the mountain slopes, accompanied by wood, sediments and stones, which caused severe damage both in the Elenite region and in other settlements in the country. This was a natural disaster of exceptional magnitude, not a consequence of human intervention.

Nature showed a force that infrastructure cannot stop

Aware of the public tension and the many speculations, we want to clearly state that all buildings and facilities on the territory of the holiday village “Elenite“ were built legally, according to approved projects and with the necessary permits. At the base of the complex there is a massive drainage collector with a width of about 20 meters, a height of 2 meters and a length of over 700 meters, which has been functioning without problems for more than 30 years and successfully diverts rainwater from the mountain to the sea. However, with such an unprecedented water mass, even the most robust engineering solutions are powerless against nature.

At the moment, when floods are also occurring in different parts of the country, including in places where there is neither a river, nor ravines, nor construction, it becomes clear that this is not a matter of a local problem, but of a climate extreme that affects everyone.

We are not looking for excuses – we are looking for solutions and cooperation

The management of the holiday village “Elenite“ assumes its moral responsibility to assist the victims, to cooperate with the institutions and to participate in the full restoration of the area. Our teams are already working to clean up, assess the damage and ensure safety on the territory of the complex. At the same time, we call on state institutions to provide real support – both in emergency recovery and in the prevention of future similar disasters.

This is a moment when the state must be with its citizens, not against them. We cannot allow the focus to shift from helping the victims to searching for those responsible where there are none.

A call to the state: prevention saves lives

The disaster at Elenite showed something obvious - the weather has become more extreme, and the prevention and early warning system - insufficient. What is needed is:
- regular cleaning of ravines and watersheds;
- control of logging in the upper parts of the mountains;
- establishment of rainfall monitoring and automatic notification in case of risk of torrential rain.
These are not wishes - these are lessons paid for with human lives.

Our thoughts are with the people who lost loved ones, homes and work. The management of the holiday village “Elenite“ will continue to provide full cooperation to the institutions and help the victims. Let this disaster not be a reason for accusations, but for unity, action and responsibility. Nature is not to blame. And we have no enemy - except our own inaction.
