The Sofia Municipal Council (SOS) adopted the report of the Mayor of Sofia Vasil Terziev, which gives consent to the municipal company "Sofekostroy" EAD to use its own and borrowed funds in the amount of up to 9 million leva including VAT to purchase specialized equipment necessary to address the waste crisis in the capital. The report was adopted unanimously.
The funds will be used to purchase various types of garbage collection vehicles, automatic and manual sweepers, as well as transport equipment for servicing street bins, vehicles for washing and disinfecting waste containers, small-sized and multifunctional machines for winter and summer cleaning. Some of the equipment will be able to be re-equipped according to the season - for example, from snow removal machines to water carriers, the report says.
It also states that the measure is necessary to improve the efficiency of waste collection and transportation and to improve the quality of cleaning services in Sofia. The document provides for the funds to be provided through a loan with a term of up to 60 months and a grace period of 24 months for repayment of the principal and interest. The interest rate for this period is set as the prime interest rate plus one point (as of October 1, 2025, it is 1.81%).
The submitters of the related report, including municipal councilors Boris Bonev, Diana Angelova and Georgi Zografski, emphasize that the purchase of new equipment will strengthen the capacity of “Sofekostroy“ and will allow for faster and better cleaning of streets and public spaces.
