Taxi prices in Plovdiv are increasing. The change comes into effect today. The daily rate per kilometer is 1.37 leva, and the night rate - 1.56 leva. The increase is between 18 and 27 stotinki. The fare will be charged double - until now it was 0.25 leva, and now it will be 0.49 leva, Nova TV reported.
"The increase in taxi services is due to catching up with inflation, not due to the upcoming introduction of the euro. An average exchange rate will be about one leva difference, so I don't think it's drastic," Diyan Stanev, chairman of the Taxi Drivers Association in Plovdiv, told Bulgarian National Radio.
He added that with the updated prices, the turnover of taxi drivers will increase by 10%.
"For a taxi driver, the turnover is not a net profit, because he has an awful lot of expenses before he gets the net profit," Stanev explained.
The Municipal Council should not consider and vote on the change in the tariffs of Plovdiv taxis, since the updated prices fall within the maximum limits of the ordinance. 80% of the taxi cars in the city under the hills already have devices set to the euro.
