GERB leader Boyko Borisov may be summoned for questioning in the criminal case against the former co-chair of "We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria" Kiril Petkov. This became clear after today's court hearing in the case related to the arrest of the former prime minister nearly four years ago.

The case is being conducted for possible abuse of power by Kiril Petkov in his capacity as Prime Minister during Borisov's detention in March 2022.

Sofia Deputy City Prosecutor Angel Kanev explained to the media the reasons why Borisov has not given evidence until now.

"Furthermore, Borisov was not questioned until the pre-trial phase of the criminal proceedings, since when the interrogation was supposed to take place, the immunity of the accused person was not lifted," said Angel Kanev, quoted by Bulgaria ON AIR.

The prosecutor added that the investigation was concluded at the pre-trial phase, since the factual situation has been clarified, but the procedure will probably continue in the trial phase. "We believe that several more people will be summoned later and questioned", specified Prosecutor Kanev.

Former Prime Minister and current MP Kiril Petkov expressed confidence in the final outcome of the trial.

"The trial is moving normally. It will be shown that I did not commit a crime", stated Kiril Petkov after the hearing.

He also drew attention to other current political and legal cases. "The problem at the moment is what is happening with Nikola Barbutov and Blagomir Kotsev", added the former co-chairman of PP-DB.

The thesis of the state prosecution remains unchanged - according to the prosecutor's office, Kiril Petkov ordered the detention of the GERB leader in violation of legal procedures. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for January.
