Once again, Sofia woke up to a desecrated monument related to the memory of Bulgarian Jews. This time, the vandalism was directed at the monument to Dimitar Peshev - one of the brightest personalities in Bulgarian history and a man whose merits for the salvation of Bulgarian Jews are recognized throughout the world.
This was announced on "Facebook" by the Organization of Jews in Bulgaria "Shalom".
The desecration of this monument is an act not only against his memory, but also against the courage of all who, at the risk of their lives, stood up to protect their fellow citizens of Jewish origin. The case of Dimitar Peshev is an integral part of Bulgarian and world history and is among the most striking examples of human dignity and moral strength.
After the desecration of the Monument of Salvation in Sofia, the Monument of Gratitude in Burgas and the synagogues in Varna and Sofia, this new case cannot be considered an isolated event. For us, this is part of a targeted and organized campaign aimed at the trust and well-being between Jews and Bulgarians in our country.
This morning, the organization organized a cleaning of the monument. We categorically state that we will not allow our cities to be shamed by such actions. We call on the competent institutions to take all necessary steps to expose and counteract these shameful acts.
We express our gratitude to the Chairperson of the Commission for Protection against Discrimination, Ms. Elka Bojova, for the timely assistance and the information provided, indicate from "Shalom".
