BSP is holding its 51st congress, defined as fateful for the future of the party. The forum on February 7 and 8 will decide key issues regarding leadership, course and preparation for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The formation will hold a two-day meeting in Hall 3 of the National Palace of Culture. The first item on the agenda is an analysis of the participation of "BSP-United Left" in the government in the 51st National Assembly, presented by the Chairman of the National Council and Deputy Prime Minister in resignation Atanas Zafirov and the Chairman of the parliamentary group Dragomir Stoynev.
The delegates will have to discuss and adopt the left's pre-election platform for the upcoming early parliamentary elections and the guidelines for the development of the party, prepared by a working group chaired by Ivan Takov.
The third item on the agenda is the early termination of the powers of the Chairman of the National Council and the election of a new leader.
According to Georgi Gyokov, the congress is the place for all important decisions — to change the course, leadership and public trust:
"The supreme body of the party is the BSP congress. Any decisions to change the course can be made there. The only thing I do not expect from the congress is to change the ideological essence of the BSP."
Gabriel Valkov, who is a candidate for leader, emphasizes that the most important thing is for the new chairman to unite the party and prepare it for the elections:
"Because there are really many problems, different opinions within the organization. We need a consensus figure who will unite the BSP and appear together in the upcoming early parliamentary elections. The congress will decide the fate of Zafirov, terminate his mandate and then we will elect a new chairman. A congress with an election of delegates — This is the new statute, we canceled the direct election of the previous congress."
The new platform "Another Bulgaria" will also be discussed, which aims to overcome the oligarchic model, restore statehood and return to basic socialist values.
Borislav Gutsanov and Ivan Takov stated that the party must wisely choose the most suitable leader in the current difficult political situation.
"Every time demands its own leader and indeed the congress must approach it wisely."
"From the point of view of the current situation, some reassessments must be made."
The current chairman Atanas Zafirov is not resigning, and the final decision will be made by the delegates today and tomorrow.
