The big problem is that Europe does not have a unified position on the war in the Middle East. And the bigger problem is that it cannot have a unified position, because the foreign policy of the European Union is determined unanimously by the 27 member states, with the right of veto. This was said in the program "From the Day" on BNT by MEP Radan Kanev.
In such a position, differences between individual European countries regarding the Middle East appear, and the domestic politics of individual countries also have an influence. In Europe, there is a prevailing position that in the Middle East we are talking about a war without goals, and then it cannot have positive results. It contradicts international law, but it is also extremely ineffective – President Trump did not inform his European allies in advance, nor did he inform the US Congress. This is not a good start to a gigantic adventure. When America attacks Iran, it is a problem of global security. The regime in Iran is the most despotic and the most repulsive, but at the moment we do not see this regime falling, Kanev said.
In today's world, in which the right of force is starting to become more important than the right itself, Europe cannot afford to continue conducting foreign policy in the same way as before - with the unanimity of 27 countries. At the moment, the gap between politics, as Europe understands it, and politics, as the US understands it, is becoming too wide. The prevailing position in Europe must become a common position, because this union, as it was created at the beginning, does not exist at the moment, the MEP added.
The separation of the European economy from energy dependence on Russia is becoming a security issue, because it has become clear that Moscow is using its energy resources as a weapon. If we want to have security, we must build the energy system in such a way that we are not dependent on the whims of the Kremlin, Radan Kanev pointed out.
He also commented on the decision adopted today in the National Assembly, by which the deputies obliged the caretaker government to submit to parliament a draft law to ratify Bulgaria's accession, as a founding state, to the Charter of the Peace Council of US President Donald Trump.
The topic of the Peace Council is not being discussed in the European Parliament, because a large part of the European Union countries have refused to join, with varying degrees of categoricality, except for two – Hungary and Bulgaria. The signature of former Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov stands under a specific document that no one has yet deigned to translate into Bulgarian. The majority that voted today - GERB, "There is such a people" and DPS-New Beginning, and all those who hid – MECH, "Velicie", APS and part of the BSP, have not read the document in Bulgarian, Kanev emphasized.
This is a one-person professional organization of Donald Trump, in which he holds all the powers. This is putting the state of Bulgaria in a subordinate position to one person. No one can accept such humiliation and that is why this ridiculous document has not been translated. According to documents, the USA is not even part of this Peace Council, only Trump is part of it. This is an organization with completely unclear goals, it is not clear why Bulgaria should join. Pushing to ratify such a document is a bit ugly. And requiring the cabinet to ratify such a document by parliament is a legal absurdity, the MEP also said.
