The State Internal Affairs Directorate (SDVR) is carrying out massive checks on drivers of electric scooters in Sofia, informs Inspector Ivo Bikov from the "Traffic Police".
Since the beginning of March alone, 250 people have been fined, most of whom are adults. Statistics from the beginning of the year show six accidents involving such vehicles, with three of them involving injuries.
"These electric scooters are not toys, but vehicles, and the use of helmets can save human lives," said Bykov, quoted by BTA.
Of the total number of people sanctioned, 148 were fined for not wearing a safety helmet.
According to the police inspector, electric scooter drivers generally do not get off the vehicle when crossing a pedestrian crossing.
