Contrera: Sofia is in the dark! We need many times more funding for street lighting

When the capital had a budget, nothing was done, and now – there is no money. Where is it? - asks the municipal councilor

“There are massive complaints, signals and grievances about non-working or missing street lighting from different areas of the capital“.

This was signaled by the deputy chairman of the transport commission at the Sofia Municipal Council, Carlos Contrera. He is categorical that the problem with the lack of street lighting in the Sofia Municipality is deepening.

“For the third year of this mandate, there is no concept and solutions. There are promises, but no solutions. Maintenance is lame, for months and years there is no response to signals about non-working street lighting. Cases for major repairs or the construction of new lighting are pending at the offices of “Moskovska 33“.

Contrera explains that the standard answer is – “there is no money“! At the same time, however, in 2024 and 2025 there was a budget, but it simply wasn't enough, and the Municipality remained deaf to the proposals to increase funding.

„In 2026, there really is no money anymore“, the mayor points out.

Carlos Contrera also points out that when the estimate for capital expenditures was voted on March 12, 2026, to be financed until the adoption of a regular budget, the money for street lighting was cut again.

„I proposed providing 3,000,000 euros for the construction of street lighting and 2,049,751 euros for the major renovation of street lighting. Guess how the PPDB, Spasi Sofia, GERB and BSP voted in the Municipal Council hall? You guessed it - they voted „against“. And the results are visible - you will recognize them by their deeds. Otherwise, everyone is very, very concerned. But when action is needed, they do exactly the opposite of what is necessary.“, describes the situation Contrera.

In the coming days, VMRO experts will prepare a new proposal to Vasil Terziev and the Sofia Municipal Council, to be submitted by Carlos Contrera.
