The decision for Bulgaria to become part of US President Donald Trump's Peace Board was completely outside the common position of the European Union. This was, to put it mildly, a rather unreasonable and infinitely conjunctural move, which we subsequently tried to compensate for with no less inadequate actions in terms of ratification and so on.
This was stated by the director of the Institute of Economics and International Relations and former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Lyubomir Kyuchukov on Radio FOCUS in the program "Bulgaria, Europe and the World in Focus".
On April 2, Bulgaria participated in talks on the liberation of the Strait of Hormuz. According to Kyuchukov, our country's participation in this dialogue was important.
"We participated in this online meeting, which was held at the initiative of the British government, but what is key and what I did not hear from the Bulgarian side, but heard from many other countries, is that the Strait of Hormuz cannot be liberated militarily while there is a war there, because this would mean that all these military forces that enter there would join the war in one way or another - to be put under attack and possibly join the military actions," he said.
Kyuchukov also quoted the words of US President Donald Trump: "Liberate your strait and take your oil for the Europeans."
"This proposal is rejected by practically all countries. Yes, there is a willingness from many countries to participate in the liberation of shipping there, but after the end of the military actions. Bulgaria, by the way, said here that it has no possibilities, of course, purely technically, to participate in this participation," he concluded.
