A huge traffic jam has blocked traffic on the road to Greece on the first of a series of weekends for this year's Easter. A long line of cars has formed in the section between Simitli and Kresna, with vehicles completely stopped in places in the Kresna Gorge, and movement is minimal.
The main reason for the kilometer-long traffic jam is the intense flow of travelers to our southern neighbor, and not traffic accidents. The police confirm that there are no registered accidents or temporary blockades in the area that would artificially stop the passage. Law enforcement teams have significantly increased their presence on the route and are manually regulating traffic to prevent risky overtaking and additional tension among drivers.
While thousands of Bulgarians wait in the gorge, shortly before Kresna, the active construction of the new bypass route of the "Struma" motorway continues. Construction activities are progressing on schedule, with the ambition being to complete the large-scale infrastructure project next year. After its final commissioning, transit traffic will be taken out of the city, which should permanently solve the problem of regular traffic jams in the area.
