Damage in Sofia after the powerful storm: Dozens of reports

Emergency teams remove fallen trees and drain blocked manholes in the capital after the brief disaster

A strong summer storm, accompanied by torrential rain, strong winds and intense hail, hit Sofia in the afternoon hours of August 24.

According to official data reported by BNT, the Sofia Municipality received a total of 34 fallen tree alerts and 14 for boiling.

Rapid mobilization of emergency services

The teams of the “Emergency Assistance and Prevention“ Directorate and the Sofia Inspectorate began immediate patrols in the most affected areas. The main efforts are aimed at:

Cleaning up a fallen leaf table. Drain clogged shafts. Clean up branches from city infrastructure.

As reported by the Bulgarian National Radio, a total of about 60 reports of damage have been registered in the National System 112 on the territory of Sofia-city and Sofia-region. Of these, 38 are for fallen trees and problems with the power grid.

Problems with traffic and public transport

In addition to the dozens of broken branches, the wind has also knocked down road signs. According to information from the Sofia Municipality, 3 reports of damaged traffic lights have been received. One of the accidents is at the key intersection between the boulevards “Bulgaria“ and “Gotse Delchev“. The movement of some public transport lines was also temporarily disrupted.

There are no reports of injured citizens. Reports of material damage continue to be processed in a timely manner by the competent services.
