The security of the Bulgarian borders and the measures that we are successfully implementing can serve as a model for the entire European Union. This was stated by the Minister of Interior Ivan Demerdzhiev to the Executive Director of “Frontex“ Hans Leytens.

The two united in their views that Frontex should support the member states even more actively in the fight against illegal migration and new security threats. "It is necessary to achieve a single standard for security at external borders that would work for the benefit of the entire European Union", stressed Demerdzhiev.

He added that the entire community must be ready to respond to new security challenges, including in countering threats arising from the entry of unmanned aerial vehicles.

„For Bulgaria, the partnership with Frontex is of key importance. As a country on a key external border of the European Union, we protect not only our national border, but the security of the entire Schengen area“, said Minister Demerdzhiev.

High assessment was also given to the operational partnership with Frontex. Within the framework of the joint operation „Bulgaria 2026“ 160 employees from the Agency's permanent corps are deployed at the country's external borders.

In addition to the conversation with the Executive Director, Minister Demerdzhiev also held a meeting with the Bulgarian employees working at Frontex, and was introduced to the work of the Agency's operational center.

“A stronger Frontex means, above all, more security and more effective support on the ground. The development of the Agency must be guided by the real needs of the Member States and the specific risks at the external borders,“ emphasized the Bulgarian Minister of the Interior.
