Stefan Yanev: There is propaganda in public discourse about drone attacks

They are not a direct threat, but they are dangerous for flights, added the former Minister of Defense

Some of the information in public discourse about the increased number of drone attacks is simply propaganda. This was said on the air of “The Day of Live” on NOVA NEWS by former Minister of Defense Stefan Yanev.

According to him, there are many reasons for the appearance of such drones - among them provocation, including one under a foreign flag and with commercial interest. “They are not a direct threat, but they are dangerous for flights”, added Yanev.

According to him, everything that is said about building a wall to protect against drones sounds good, but the reality is different. “The point is that control must be effective, the word “wall” is a metaphor. This is a new moment, which from the point of view of national interests must be used very wisely”.

“This is a new moment for everyone, because the effectiveness of drones and their widespread application at least at the tactical level in Ukraine has shown that this capability must be developed”, explained Yanev.

According to him, it is a serious challenge to connect all this into one network, so Bulgaria should not treat the task as an order that it must fulfill, but quite consciously enter into a very precise regime of calculations.

“I cannot answer whether there will be a single center. It is a matter of time. States must build capabilities, create their own procedures for obtaining information, making decisions and influencing certain goals. When they are clear at the national level, they are also coordinated internationally. Then such a center can be thought of. "I don't think it exists at the moment," the former defense minister commented.

“The systems for capturing and neutralizing drones are completely new, because some drones can be captured by radar, others cannot. It's all a matter of development”, Yanev commented.

He said that he doesn't see a change in Donald Trump's thinking towards Ukraine. “I see a change in the means of expression he uses. But there is no change in his behavior”.

“Regarding the war, Trump has made it clear that the US will no longer pay. The Europeans should be so kind as to buy from them and pay for the war. The second thing he is categorical about is that an American soldier will not go to Ukrainian territory. The third is that he will not allow the start of World War III. And perhaps the fourth thing is that he told Europe categorically that it is time to pay for the pleasure of living under an American military umbrella for over 70 years,” Yanev explained.

“There has been a lot of bellicose rhetoric in European discourse lately. We are talking about war, about rearming Europe - grandiose plans. At the same time, the EU does not have a military instrument. The one it relies on is NATO. The leading power in the Alliance is the USA. It has become clear what the main messages of the American president are. That is, NATO will more or less follow this direction,” he believes.
