"There are people who are trying to scare the population, as if if we become like Germany, Belgium or France it will be something bad. Some are starting to worry and fear what will happen to the leva," the GERB leader added

If Bulgaria receives a positive convergence report, a six-month period will begin from January 1, 2026, in which it will be possible to pay in both leva and euro. Prices will be in both leva and euro. This was stated by GERB leader Boyko Borisov, quoted by "Focus.

"There are people who are trying to scare the population, as if if we become like Germany, Belgium or France it will be something bad. Some are starting to worry and fear what will happen to the leva“, Borisov added.

The GERB leader explained that people who have cash will be able to exchange it at any bank and post office, and there will also be a security policeman on duty at post offices.

"After a year, if someone still has leva, they will be able to exchange it at the BNB - without a deadline. Even after 5 years, if you find 2,000-3,000 leva in cash, you just go to the BNB and exchange it", he specified.

Borisov added that active action is being taken on the topic, but it is necessary to wait until June 4, when it will become clear what the convergent report is. "If it is good - we start. If it is not - there is no point in the whole organization".

He promised that an awareness campaign would be conducted for citizens, and according to him, all mayors, regardless of their political affiliation, would be trained so that they could inform people how to exchange money.

Regarding prices, he stated again: "The CPC has great powers. All prices will be listed in both leva and euros. And anyone who tries to speculate will be sanctioned".
