„The American strikes on nuclear targets in Iran have been practiced for a year. The operation is the result of long-planned military preparation, which began during the time of President Biden”, said in the program „Wake up” on NOVA, Prof. Vladimir Chukov.
According to him, the Iranian leadership was informed in advance that the attacks would not affect the state government, but only the nuclear infrastructure.
According to him, the next step would mean a serious global escalation, because it would violate the laws of international law.
„The idea was not to overthrow the regime. The goal was clear – to send a clear message that the West's patience is running out“, explained Prof. Chukov.
He added that Iran's initial reaction was rather symbolic – through threats and attempts at internal mobilization, but without concrete actions. According to him, Israel's actions are more unpredictable and are currently key to future developments.
“From now on, things depend on Israel. If their strikes continue, escalation is possible. If they stop – there will be a chance for negotiations“, the expert emphasized.
Prof. Chukov also pointed out that Tehran and Washington had held informal contacts before the airstrikes, with the US proposing a compromise model – Iran participating in an international consortium for the peaceful use of nuclear energy. After Iran refused, the US has moved to a military option.
„Diplomacy has failed. The strikes are a consequence of a refusal to make concessions, but paradoxically - they may open the way to new negotiations“, commented Chukov.
When asked why the US stood firmly behind Israel, Prof. Chukov replied: „The ties between the two countries are not only strategic - they are historical, religious and cultural. Israel is de facto part of the US national security system“.
