The first skeleton has been discovered in the late antique graves that appeared during the renovation of the northern wing of the National Academy of Arts (NAA).

„The building is on a part of the eastern antique necropolis of Serdica, so it was known and expected that we would come across a core of grave structures. The necropolis has been known for a long time. Colleagues have studied it before us, and they are still studying it“, Elena Nikolova, head of archaeological research at the NHA from the Regional History Museum in Sofia (RIM), told BTA.

„It extends from the church „St. Sophia“ and moves eastward towards the „Zaimov“ park, so it is not surprising for us that we came across the first such structure – "tegul grave", Nikolova further said.

More similar skeletons are expected to be discovered, the National Academy of Arts added.

Stage 2 of the academy's reconstruction has recently begun.

“Stage 1 was implemented and finalized in 2020, and this is precisely the white building that appeared on the corner of “Vasil Levski“ Boulevard and “Oborishte“ Street - the so-called new academic building“, recalls Prof. Georgi Yankov, rector of the National Academy of Arts.
