A worrying trend - the number of incidents at sea has been increasing in recent days. August is dangerous because of the treacherous underwater currents and high waves, which become a trap for inexperienced swimmers. How to protect yourself and when will the sea calm down?
The sea has been rough for too long, unfortunately for vacationers. That is why they often ignore the orders of lifeguards and the red flag, which leads to risky rescue operations. According to the Bulgarian Red Cross, 20 people have drowned on the Black Sea coast since the beginning of the summer, bTV reported.
Ivan Georgiev from the Institute for Water Safety warned: “Currents are forming due to the strong wind, our call is for people to be a little patient, during this time we are not “closing the sea“, we are organizing temporary bathing areas in suitable places with a larger number of lifeguards“.
And if we get into a treacherous current, he advises not to panic, to remain calm and relax on the surface of the water to get out of it.
If we see a drowning person, Georgiev advises not to enter the water alone, but to call emergency services. As a last resort, he said we could provide an object to keep the victim afloat until the emergency services arrive.
