Deputies are meeting urgently because of the water crisis. The Environment and Water Committee is meeting urgently. The reason is that thousands of people across the country are on a diet. The most serious situation is in Pleven, where over 100 thousand people are without water, and the city is facing a state of emergency.

According to the Minister of Environment and Waters, Manol Genov, “we cannot talk about critical water shortages. According to him, state-owned dams that store water for drinking purposes are 65% or more full compared to the same period last year.

Against this backdrop, the extraordinary session of the deputies was convened on Tuesday, August 19, by the Speaker of the National Assembly Natalia Kiselova, shortly after the leader of the DPS-Novo Nachola Delyan Peevski called for it.

During the session, 11 urgent and extraordinary measures were presented by the ruling majority. Some of them:

The Council of Ministers to prepare a national response plan within 2 weeks,

The available water sources to be cleaned urgently,

Projects and drilling to be funded as a priority,

Legislative changes to be undertaken,

Measures to be taken against water theft.

The opposition, represented by “We continue the change – Democratic Bulgaria“, were categorical that these measures are not sufficient and long-term solutions are needed.
