“The Diplomatic Service is the face of Bulgaria before the world and should not be a hostage to domestic political attempts to abuse procedures“, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev before the start of today's government meeting.
The Council of Ministers adopted a decision today proposing to the President to issue decrees for the appointment of 19 ambassadors and one permanent representative to the UN.
Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov indicated that the proposals are being considered in a closed session. “This is the usual practice, as the names of the candidates should not be disclosed before receiving the consent of the host countries. All proposals are for career diplomats – there are no political appointments“, the Prime Minister was categorical.
“The fact that twenty highly qualified career diplomats will take up their posts is proof that Bulgaria upholds professionalism and complies with all constitutional and legal requirements,“ said Georgiev. The Foreign Minister added that the government had carried out the process in the best and most professional manner. “I have always maintained and believe that with its actions the government has proven that it complies with all constitutional and legal provisions. The more solid and consolidated we are, the more confident we exude and the more authoritatively we are perceived by our partners,“ said Georgiev.
