Airflow Is Key When Arranging a Bedroom

Beds, cabinets, curtains and appliances can block air ducts, heating units and access to windows

The bed and wardrobe are usually the first elements to be placed in a bedroom plan. Airflow, however, often remains out of sight until the furniture has already been assembled. A tall cabinet may cover a ventilation grille, a thick curtain may hang in front of a heating unit, and the only convenient place for a fan may turn out to direct it away from the bed.

For the Bulgarian market, the practical approach is to start the plan with the fixed elements. It should include the exact dimensions of the room, niches, sills, the door-opening direction, windows, outlets, radiators, indoor air-conditioning units and all visible grilles. If possible, it should be established which grille supplies air and which one extracts it. It is not safe to assume that every opening can be covered in the same way.

Windows require particular attention. A bed that fits under the window on paper may make it difficult to open the window or reach the handle. This is also important in rooms where the window is relevant for ventilation or evacuation. When making changes to installations, heating units and electrical outlets, the furniture plan must not replace a design or the work of a qualified professional.

Furniture Should Be Drawn with Doors and Drawers Open

The wardrobe, chest of drawers and bedside tables should be entered with their actual dimensions, including the space required to open doors and drawers. The space needed to stand in front of them should also be checked. A tall headboard may obstruct access to an opening that remains clear with a low bed frame. Thick curtains should likewise be considered in their closed position, not only when they are drawn back against the wall.

In Bulgarian homes, one room often serves more than one function. If there is a desk in the bedroom, the chair should be included in the plan in the position in which it is used. The same applies to laundry baskets, drying racks, suitcases or additional storage boxes. These are precisely the items that often occupy the spaces left clear in front of the radiator, air conditioner or ventilation grille.

An Air Purifier and a Fan Do Not Solve the Same Problem

For an air purifier, the location should be chosen according to the specific model, not only its appearance. There must be free space around the air intake and outlet, as well as access for removing the filter. The small size of the appliance does not prove that its capacity is sufficient for a given room. The floor area, ceiling height and connections with the rest of the home all matter.

A fan has a different function. It moves air for greater comfort, but it does not independently bring in fresh air, remove particles or correct inadequate ventilation. Its position should be assessed from the bed and from the chair if the room is also used as a workspace. The appliance must be stable and out of reach of curtains and loose fabrics, while the cable must not cross the bedside path.

Lovech Regional Administration reminds residents: “Do not overload the electrical installation and do not use a large number of extension cords and power strips at the same time.“ This rule is particularly important when chargers, a lamp, a fan and an air purifier are gathered near the bed.

Check with the Door Closed

The bedroom should also be assessed in the condition in which it is used most often. With the door closed, check whether the air, temperature and access to the appliances remain acceptable. If the room constantly feels different from the rest of the home, moving the bedside table may free a grille, but it does not prove that the system is working properly. In such a case, an assessment by a qualified professional is necessary.

Before the final furnishing, the positions can be marked with masking tape or cardboard. This makes it possible to check the routes on both sides of the bed, the opening of drawers, access to the window and the space needed for cleaning. A slightly narrower cabinet or a repositioned chair is often enough to keep the air duct, outlet and path to the door clear.
