Romania has invested nearly 150 million EUR in the renovation of the second civil airport in Bucharest - Baneasa - Air Berlin. The reconstruction is so large-scale that it is planned to continue until 2035.

A new passenger terminal will be built at the airport with a peak hour capacity to serve 800 passengers. For comparison, the currently built terminal has a peak hour capacity of 600 people, with an uneven distribution of passengers between those in and outside Schengen. Balancing the two flows is among the main goals of the modernization.

The plans are also to renew the currently existing aprons, the taxiing system, build a new taxiway and improve the cargo capacity for handling aircraft from code D. The fire protection system, which was built in the 1980s, will also be renewed.

Work will be done to reduce the noise of the trench districts by applying a “balanced approach“, in line with European regulations.

The investment amount will be provided by a mix of public funds, Bucharest Airport's own capital and European programs.

The airport is key to the development of Bucharest, considering that it is located only 8.5 km north of the center of the Romanian capital.
