Groundbreaking for a church in the village of Kirkovo in Kardzhali

It is being built entirely with donations

The construction of a new Orthodox church has begun in the Rhodope Mountains. It will be named "Saints Sedmochislenitsi" and will be erected in the village of Kirkovo in Kardzhali. The church will be built entirely with donations, BNT specifies.

After more than thirty years, the Christians in Kirkovo waited for the construction of an Orthodox church to begin. The foundation stone was blessed and laid by the Bishop of Belogradchik and Vicar of the Plovdiv Metropolis, Polycarp:

"There is a deep meaning in the fact that here in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains, a land where Christians and Muslims have lived for generations, a temple is being built that will be a source of peace, of kindness, of piety."

A cross from Jerusalem and an excerpt from the Gospel were embedded in the foundations of the temple, which will bear the name "Holy Seventeen". The temple will be built entirely with donations – from the excavations – to the last brick. And the funds, nearly 110,000 leva, were collected in a few months.

Anton Terziev - donor: "Donation is very important, such events happen with donations, as it is very difficult in our country, without a donation, for something bigger to happen."

Dozens of laypeople attending the ritual received the blessing of Bishop Polycarp.

Olga Angelova - resident of Kirkovo: "The construction of a new temple is an achievement for this region, because we have been waiting for it for a long time. I have been here for thirty years, now we are very happy that there will be such a temple, both for us and for our children."

The hope of the Orthodox Christians in Kirkovo is that the temple will be built in two years.
