In addition to Evelin Banev, known by the nickname Brendo, only one other prisoner has been proposed for early release in the last 7 months by the head of the Sofia prison Borislav Chorbanski, dariknews.bg reported.

This is shown by data from the Ministry of Justice, it became clear after an inquiry by NOVA.

In the meantime, the investigation against the temporarily suspended director Borislav Chorbanski continues. He has been sanctioned because he did not notify the prison management of his request for Brendo's early release.

The former director of the Sofia prison Mileti Oresharski denies that Chorbanski decided on his own to release Evelin Banev early. “This proposal is not his own idea, or at least it should be. It is based on the opinions of other specialists who work in the prison - social workers, psychologists and in general all specialists who are engaged in this re-education work”, says Oresharski.

The prison warden does not work directly with prisoners. In order for a case to be activated in court, in addition to correction, the prisoner must have served half of his sentence. Last year, Brendo received a total sentence of 10 and a half years in three cases in our country, in Romania and in Italy. According to lawyers, the fact that he surrendered voluntarily can be considered a mitigating circumstance, although he was a fugitive from justice for 6 years. “The court has the right to collect additional evidence. The prosecutor's office also participates in the proceedings itself, which can also request the collection of evidence. The prosecutor's office can challenge the UPO. "He can protest a court decision if it goes in that direction," explained lawyer Hristo Botev.
