American actor and director Robert Redford has died at the age of 89, The New York Times reported.

The director died early Tuesday morning, September 16, at his home in Utah, USA. He died in his sleep, but the specific cause of his death has not been revealed, the publication said.

Redford decided to retire from acting in 2018. At the time, he said that he wanted to leave on a positive note and move forward with his retired life. At the same time, the actor noted that he could agree to direct a project.

Robert Redford is best known for the films “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid“ (1969) and "The Thing" (1973). He also starred in "The Great Gatsby" (1974) and "All the President's Men" (1976). He won an "Oscar" for directing his debut film "Ordinary People."
