Taverns in Russia are on the rise, but vodka remains the country's favorite strong drink

63.5% of the hard alcohol market is occupied by vodka

Vodka has become the most popular type of strong alcohol among Russians, RBC Wine reported as refers to data from analysts from the research company IWSR.

The share of this type of strong alcohol is 63.5 percent of the Russian market, excluding beer and wine. The statistics in the Russian Federation are very different from the world statistics. Thus, brandy occupies a leading position among strong alcohol in the world with a market share of 23.2 percent. For its part, the share of vodka worldwide is estimated at 10.9% of the market excluding beer and wine, experts said.

At the same time, the volume of strong alcohol consumption in Russia is gradually decreasing. Thus, according to the Ministry of Health, in 2023, ethanol consumption per capita has decreased to 8.4 liters. For comparison, in 2018, this indicator in the country was 9.4 liters per person.

This trend is expected to continue in the long term. “A gradual transition from the northern type of alcohol consumption to moderate alcohol consumption is expected – with lower ethanol consumption per capita”, she concluded.

RBC Wine reported an increase in the number of wineries in Russia. According to analysts, over the past 20 years, the share of citizens who reject alcohol has increased from 23.7 to 38.8 percent. At the same time, among the age group of 16 to 25 years, the figure more than doubled - from 25.4 to 55 percent.
