September 8: We celebrate International Literacy Day

It was announced for the first time in 1965

September 8 is International Literacy Day.

It was announced for the first time in 1965. Every year the day has its own message.

According to UNESCO, literacy contributes to peace by supporting the achievement of individual freedoms, a better understanding of the world, and the prevention and resolution of conflicts.

According to the United Nations, about 780 million people, or one in five people in the world, do not have even minimal literacy, 75 million children do not attend school, and many more do not attend classes consistently or drop out of the education system. In 35 countries, less than 50% of the population is literate.

The situation is most alarming in the countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Haiti, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Chad. There, more than half of the elderly are illiterate.
