Brighton midfielder James Milner has broken Gareth Barry's record for the most appearances in the Premier League, BTA reported.

The 40-year-old Milner started as a starter for Brighton against Brentford, making his 654th appearance in the top flight, one more than Barry has played.

Milner made his Premier League debut in 2002, when he appeared in a game for Leeds United aged just 16. He has also played for Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool.

Despite coming out on top in terms of appearances, the former England international is still a long way off the top spot in terms of minutes played. Gareth Barry remains on top with 54,439. Milner is 14th in that ranking, having had 40,476 before the match against Brentford.
