Olympic champion Lucas Pinheiro Broten (Brazil) won the men's giant slalom in Lillehammer (Norway), part of the Alpine Skiing World Cup finals, and triumphed with the title in the discipline for the 2025/2026 season.
The victory was his eighth for the World Cup on the Norwegian track, which he knows well, and the local fans applauded him despite his history.
The representative of Brazil achieved the best overall time - 2:20.65 minutes, after being fastest in the first run. With the victory, he took advantage of the elimination in the first run of the previous leader in the standings for the Small Crystal Globe, Marco Odermatt from Switzerland. Lucas Pinheiro Broten collected 547 points to top the standings, Odermatt finished second with 495, and fellow Swiss Loic Meyjar was third with 486 points. It was also the first title in the discipline for a skier representing Brazil. Pinheiro Broten won the Young Crystal Globe in slalom in 2023, but was then competing for Norway before changing his nationality.
Odermatt, who has already secured the World Cup Grand Crystal Globe for the fifth time, was hoping to add the giant slalom title to those in downhill and super-G, which he also won this season, but made a mistake in the first run and failed to finish.
Meyjar also had a chance to take first place, but finished second in today's race, 0.58 seconds behind Lucas Pinheiro Broten, and remained third in the discipline. Third place in Lillehammer was taken by Atlet Lee McGrath (Norway), finishing 0.87 seconds behind the winner.
Frenchman Alexi Penteureau ended his alpine skiing career with an 11th place finish in the final giant slalom of the season.
Ahead of the last men's race of the World Cup finals - slalom on Wednesday (March 25), champion Marco Odermatt is in the lead with 1,626 points, followed by Pinheiro Broten with 1,058 and McGrath with 904 points.
Also competing in the slalom will be Bulgarian Albert Popov, who is in 65th place with 106 points in the overall standings and 21st in the discipline. The leader in the standings is Atleti Lee McGrath, ahead of Lucas Pinheiro Broten.
