Driver Juha Mietinen has died and six drivers were injured after a crash during qualifying for the Nurburgring 24-hour race, organizers said, BTA reported.

66-year-old Finn Mietinen has died after a crash at the start of the race. All other drivers were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“During the first qualifying race for the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, a serious incident involving seven drivers occurred in the early stages of the race,“ the Nürburgring said in a statement.

“Despite the immediate arrival of emergency services, medical teams were unable to save driver Juha Mietinen (BMW 325i) after he was removed from his car. He died at the medical centre after all attempts at resuscitation failed.“

Organisers said there would be a minute's silence before the start of today's race.
