Edin Dzeko will continue his career at Schalke 04, and is expected to sign a new one-year contract with the Gelsenkirchen club, German media reported, BTA reports. The 40-year-old striker arrived at Schalke in January from Italian side Fiorentina and quickly became a key figure for the team. The Bosnian scorer scored six goals and helped the “Royal Blues” to return to the Bundesliga after three seasons in the second tier of German football.
Dzeko left his future open after participating with the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team at the World Cup in North America, but ultimately decided to stay at Schalke and help the team in the battle for survival among the best German clubs.
There is still no official confirmation from the club about the new contract, but coach Miron Muslic has indicated that Schalke is looking for players with leadership qualities and experience. “Players with character will come“, said the team's coach, and Dzeko fully fits this profile with his rich career and numerous trophies.
The Bosnian has a serious history in German football. In 2009, he became the Bundesliga champion with Wolfsburg, and a year later he finished as the top scorer of the championship. The striker subsequently played for Manchester City, Roma, Inter Milan and Fenerbahce, winning titles in England, Italy and Turkey.
In addition to Dzeko, Schalke have also signed former Germany international Robin Gossens, as the club look to build a more experienced squad for their return to the top flight.
The new season for the Gelsenkirchen team begins with a German Cup clash against fourth-division Hallescher FC on August 24. Schalke's first Bundesliga match is six days later against Augsburg.
