Angel di Maria will not play for Benfica next season. This was stated by the Argentine striker after the club failed to win the Portuguese championship title (1-1 in Braga). Thus, the team finished two points behind champions Sporting Lisbon.

The 37-year-old, who retired from international football last year after 145 appearances for the Argentine national team, spent five years at Benfica in two periods after returning to the club in 2023, and in his career he has also played for Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

"It hurts a lot to end like this after such a long year. "This was my last league match with this shirt and I'm proud to be able to wear it again," Di Maria wrote on his Instagram account.

"There's still a final on May 25 and we'll go there with all our desire to win it. Together, as always. Thank you for your support, Benfica fans," he added.

Benfica play Sporting in the Portuguese Cup final on May 25 before starting their campaign at the Club World Cup in the United States on June 16.
